BrightFarms Breaks Ground on High-Tech Greenhouse in Macon-Bibb
On June 5th, BrightFarms officially opened its first greenhouse in Georgia – an eight-acre, high-tech facility in Macon-Bibb built to produce up to 22,000 pounds of leafy greens every day. The project has already brought more than 125 jobs to the area, with plans to expand to three more eight-acre modules and 32 acres under glass.
From Vision to Reality: The Multi-Year Journey Behind BrightFarms
It started back in May 2021 with a phone call that kicked off a multi-year effort. Executive Director Stephen Adams and Project Manager Gary Wilson for the MBCIA got to work – identifying sites and quickly pulling together the local partners needed to make it happen.
Strategic Site Selection and Local Partnerships Drive Success
The MBCIA team coordinated site visits, handled due diligence, and ultimately helped shift the entire project to a new property when the original location proved challenging. As the work continued, BrightFarms’ acquisition by Cox Enterprises introduced new opportunities and refinements to the project. Through it all, the MBCIA remained a steady and engaged partner, helping to navigate the transition and keep progress moving forward.
$200 Million Investment and 300 Jobs Boost Local Economy
By mid-2022, the project had relocated to the Airport East Industrial Park, a GRAD-certified site with the infrastructure needed to support a facility of this scale. Permitting was fast, and construction moved forward. According to BrightFarms, the site also offered the “cleanest water” they’ve seen at any of their greenhouse locations nationwide. That’s largely thanks to the Macon Water Authority, one of our key partners and a nationally recognized utility that helps make projects like this possible in Macon-Bibb.
The payoff is clear: a $200 million investment in green technology, 300 new jobs for Macon-Bibb, and a new chapter for agriculture in Middle Georgia.
Climate-Smart Farming: The Future of Agriculture in Middle Georgia
Farming helped build this region, and it’s still building it today – with climate-smart technology, sustainable practices, and year-round jobs. BrightFarms demonstrates just how far that evolution can go when the right people come together, stay committed, and see the vision through.
