October is Manufacturing Month, a time to recognize the people and businesses who keep our economy moving. Nearly one in ten Americans works in manufacturing, making everything from the essentials we rely on to innovations that are changing our lives. In Macon-Bibb, manufacturing continues to be a driving force behind our growth, job creation, and resilience.
Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation at Work
Across the nation, the U.S. Department of Commerce and Manufacturing USA are highlighting the importance of manufacturing. Today’s advanced manufacturing looks much different from factories of the past. Companies now use robotics, data analytics, and digital tools to create their products. Older plants are being retrofitted to keep pace with these advancements. The result is rewarding, well-paying careers, especially for young people ready to create futures that work alongside technology.
Manufacturing careers offer stability, valuable skills, and opportunities for growth in fields like IT, logistics, engineering, and operations. Thousands of new jobs are open, and millions more will be needed in the years ahead. It’s a message we need to share.
Kicking Off Manufacturing Month
Manufacturing Day on October 3 marks the beginning of Manufacturing Month – a month dedicated to highlighting the impact of this industry on lives in Macon-Bibb, Georgia, and across the country. When our manufacturers succeed, our communities share in that success.
At the Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority (MBCIA), we are working to show what today’s manufacturing really looks like and to support education so residents are prepared for these jobs. Central Georgia Technical College and the Bibb County School District already run programs aimed at doing just that.
During October, MBCIA will share stories and data about manufacturers who drive Macon-Bibb’s economy.
Manufacturing in Macon-Bibb spans a diverse mix of sectors—from tissue and paper product converting to absorbent goods such as diapers and baby care products. Other advanced manufacturing in the area includes paperboard packaging, food processing, and automotive components. These industries are supported by strong logistics, distribution, and warehouse operations that keep products moving across the Southeast and beyond.
Major employers like Irving Tissue (Irving Consumer Products), First Quality Enterprises, and Graphic Packaging have all invested in recent expansions, reinforcing Macon-Bibb as a destination for long-term growth. Today, more than 7,100 residents are employed directly by manufacturing companies in the county.
Building on Our Momentum
Manufacturing Month is a reminder for us to keep moving forward. By preparing sites for growth, supporting workforce development, and welcoming innovation, we ensure Macon-Bibb is ready for the future of manufacturing.
This Manufacturing Day and throughout October, we invite you to join us in celebrating the manufacturers who keep Macon-Bibb thriving. Working together, we’ll ensure that our community is known for innovation, production, and creating jobs that matter.
