Growth Doesn’t Start Where You Think

When people think about economic development, they often think about new companies coming in.

But in Macon-Bibb County, a majority of the more than $3 billion in recent investment has come from companies that were already here and chose to grow.

That kind of growth does not happen by accident. It happens because companies feel supported, and because the MBCIA takes an active role in helping them succeed. It takes action.

Supporting Existing Industry Is a Core Responsibility

For the MBCIA, supporting existing industry is not secondary. It is a core responsibility.

The companies already operating in Macon-Bibb County are a major part of the community’s economic foundation. They provide jobs, reinvest in their operations, and continue to grow over time. Making sure those companies have what they need to succeed is central to the MBCIA’s work.

That support starts early. Through regular engagement, site visits, and ongoing communication, the MBCIA stays closely connected to existing industry across the community.

Because when something needs to be addressed, the MBCIA is already in a position to step in and help move it forward.

Addressing Infrastructure That Impacts Daily Operations

Infrastructure is not an abstract issue for existing industry. It affects daily operations.

Across ongoing engagement with companies, road access and conditions have consistently come up as a concern, particularly in areas like Ocmulgee East Industrial Park. Routes like Joe Tamplin Industrial Boulevard play a critical role in moving goods, supporting logistics, and keeping operations running efficiently.

In response, the MBCIA advocated for those improvements to be addressed. Working with County leadership, the MBCIA helped move the issue forward and bring attention to where action was needed.

That effort contributed to road improvements within the industrial park, supporting the companies that rely on that infrastructure every day.

This work does not stop with one project. As companies continue to grow and operate, the MBCIA remains engaged to ensure infrastructure keeps pace with their needs.

Building a Workforce Pipeline Shaped by Industry

Workforce is another area where the needs of existing industry are driving action.

Employers across Macon-Bibb County have consistently pointed to the need for a stronger, more aligned pipeline of talent. Not just more workers, but workers trained in the skills required for modern manufacturing and logistics environments.

In response, the MBCIA has worked alongside education, workforce, and community partners to help shape the Advanced Manufacturing Pathway Program (AMPPed).

This effort reflects a collaborative approach across the community. The Bibb County School District, W.S. Hutchings College and Career Academy, the Technology and Innovation Academy, and the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce have all played a role in developing the pathway. Leadership from Dr. Cassandra Washington has been instrumental in aligning education with the needs of local industry, ensuring the program reflects real-world skills and career opportunities.

Local manufacturers have also been directly involved in shaping the program, helping define the technical skills, equipment familiarity, and problem-solving abilities needed in today’s workforce.

The result is a workforce initiative built around what employers are actually asking for and designed to support long-term growth.

Growth That Reflects Confidence in Support

When companies feel supported, they are more likely to continue investing in where they are.

That pattern is clear across Macon-Bibb County.

Recent expansions from companies like Irving Consumer ProductsFirst Quality, and Coca-Cola Bottling Co. UNITED reflect more than growth. They reflect confidence. Confidence in the community and confidence in the support systems in place to help those companies succeed.

As these companies plan and execute expansions, the MBCIA works alongside them to identify needs early and connect them with the right partners. That includes coordination with local and state resources, workforce partners, and infrastructure planning.

Much of this work happens behind the scenes. But it plays a critical role in helping projects move forward, and ensuring companies can continue to grow in Macon-Bibb County.

Growth That Starts from Within

Supporting existing industry is not a one-time effort. It is an ongoing responsibility.

It requires staying connected, understanding what companies are experiencing, and stepping in when support is needed.

Across infrastructure, workforce, and expansion, the MBCIA plays an active role in helping existing industries succeed.

Because in Macon-Bibb County, growth does not just come from new companies.

It comes from the ones that are already here, choosing to stay, invest, and grow.
